TEAM HISTORY
In the 2016/17 season, Worthing Town FC entered a newly created team into the Sussex Disability Football League Juniors Division. A group of excited boys then embarked on what can only be described as a fairy-tale first season!
In their first ever match they came up against a well-established Brighton & Hove Albion in the Community team and despite taking the lead they ended up narrowly losing 4-3. They took confidence from the performance and went on an incredible run winning their next 17 matches scoring a fantastic 87 goals in the process, matches that included a 7-0 win against the previous seasons Champions, 1066 Specials and a return victory, 6-0 against AiTC. They finished the league season with the best Juniors record, 19 wins, 1 draw and 2 defeats. An outstanding first season.
Then came the boys first tournament, at the Worthing Town FC Football Festival. Again the boys performed heroically winning the final in a closely fought contest 2-1.
In October 2017 the Worthing Town Juniors were nominated and awarded as Winners of the Active Sussex Sports Awards 2017 - Team of the Year Award.
The 2017/18 season again saw the team reach new heights winning their first 22 games of the season before being held to a draw by closest challengers Seaford Town. The boys were growing and learning together, to play as a team and share their footballing journeys together. Retaining the league title was a formality in early March but a League and Cup double was denied as they boys lost an exciting Cup Final to Seaford Town. One of the highlights of the season was the resiliance the boys showed in the face of adversity and defeat when during the Cup run, in the Semi-Final, they found themselves 4-1 down with less than three minutes to go. An incredible flurry of attacks saw the game draw level in what seemed to be the last kick of the game only for Worthing Town to win the ball back instantly from the opponents and score an incredible last second, long range winner!
The team retained their Worthing Town FC Football Festival title in 2018 by overcoming Seaford Town in the Final, the two teams really striking up a competitive and challenging battle also met with great sportsmanship and support for each other.
The third season for Worthing Town in the Sussex Disability Football League saw a change in format to the way the competitions were run with shorter Cups played for at 'Guest' locations.
Worthing Town FC were winners of the Bexhill and Worthing Cups and Runners-Up in the Seaford and Lancing competitions. Some new players were joining the team and it was good to see how they were welcomed by the existing players and encouraged to participate in the games. Regular training was possible with the introduction of weekly sessions on non-matchdays at the Leisure Centre.
Missing out on a hat-trick of Football Festival titles, Worthing Town narrowly lost to Battlebridge FC from Surrey, 3-1. In a true 'Football for All' experience the teams showed great sportsmanship with younger players playing against older players and everyone participating with a smile.
Worthing Town FC were awarded 'Grassroots Project of the Year' by the Sussex County FA for the work done by the Inclusive team in the Community in September 2019 - another outstanding achievement for all those involved.
